English Vocabulary Practice Questions With Answers

Vocabulary questions are won by repetition. Short, frequent quizzes beat long word lists.

Four question types

  • Synonyms: choose the word closest in meaning, such as frugal and thrifty
  • Antonyms: choose the opposite, such as scarce and abundant
  • One-word substitution: one word for a phrase, such as bibliophile for a lover of books
  • Idioms and phrases: figurative meanings, such as "a blessing in disguise"

How to learn

Learn words in context, using a sentence you write yourself. Revisit the same words after one day, one week and one month. Test yourself with timed quizzes and keep a list of the ones you miss.
