A Daily Reading Comprehension Practice Routine
06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team
Reading comprehension improves with steady practice, not heroic sessions. This 30-minute routine fits into most schedules.
Minutes 0 to 10: read and summarise
Read one passage at a comfortable speed. Without looking back, write the main idea in one sentence and the author's tone in one word. If you cannot, you read without absorbing, and that is useful to know.
Minutes 10 to 20: answer the questions
Answer under a time limit. For each answer, find the line or lines that justify it. Avoid choosing an option just because it sounds right.
Minutes 20 to 30: review
For each wrong answer, identify why the correct option is better than yours. Often you chose an option that was true but not asked for, or one that went beyond the passage.
Over the weeks
- Week 1 to 2: focus on accuracy
- Week 3 to 4: add a time limit and reduce it slowly
- After that: mix in longer, denser passages
Read beyond practice
Add 20 minutes of reading from editorials or long-form articles. It builds vocabulary and the ability to follow arguments, which matters for CAT VARC, banking English and UPSC CSAT. For word-level improvement, see vocabulary building.
