Average Questions Practice With Answers

The key idea behind average questions is that average times count equals total. Think in totals and most problems unravel.

Work with totals

Average = Total ÷ Number of items. So Total = Average × Number. When an item is added or removed, compare the new total with the old one to find the missing value.

Worked examples

Example 1. The average of five numbers is 24. A sixth number is added and the average becomes 26. Old total = 120, new total = 156, so the sixth number is 36.

Example 2. The average of 4 numbers is 15 and the average of another 6 numbers is 20. Combined average = (60 + 120) ÷ 10 = 18.

Where it connects

Averages show up inside data interpretation and ratio problems. For exam context, see the CLAT quantitative section.
