Time, Speed and Distance Practice Questions

One relation, distance = speed × time, powers this whole topic. Unit conversion and average speed are where most mistakes occur.

Watch the units

To convert km/h to m/s, multiply by 5/18. To go from m/s to km/h, multiply by 18/5. Mixed units are the most common reason for wrong answers.

Worked examples

Example 1. A train 150 m long crosses a pole at 54 km/h. Speed = 54 × 5/18 = 15 m/s. Time = 150 ÷ 15 = 10 seconds.

Example 2. A person covers 60 km at 30 km/h and another 60 km at 60 km/h. Total distance 120 km, total time 2 + 1 = 3 hours, so the average speed is 40 km/h, not 45.

Frequently asked questions

Because the time spent at each speed differs. Always divide total distance by total time.

Add the speeds when objects move toward each other and subtract them when they move in the same direction.
