How to Practise Data Interpretation Faster
06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team
Most slowness in data interpretation (DI) comes from the way people read charts, not from the calculations.
1. Read the chart before the question
Spend ten seconds on the title, the units and the axes. Many wrong answers come from missing that the figures are in thousands, or that percentages are of a different base.
2. Approximate when options allow
If the options differ by more than 5%, round your numbers and calculate approximately. Save exact calculation for close options.
3. Compare fractions without dividing
To see whether 17/52 is larger than 23/70, cross-multiply: 17 × 70 = 1,190 and 23 × 52 = 1,196, so 23/70 is slightly larger. This is quicker and more accurate than long division.
4. Know common percentages as fractions
12.5% is 1/8, 16.67% is 1/6, 37.5% is 3/8. Build recall with percentage drills.
5. Practise in timed sets
Do one set a day with a clock. Track the time per question and the type of calculation that slows you, then drill that. Use data interpretation practice sets to begin. For how the topic appears in exams, see CAT DILR and banking quant.
