MAT Mathematical Skills Mock Tests

Last reviewed 7 October 2026

Mathematical Skills is the MAT section where speed and accuracy under a 0.25 penalty matter most. This page explains the topics, the methods that save time and how to practise.

The role of Mathematical Skills in MAT

Mathematical Skills has 30 questions among MAT's 150, at one mark each with a 0.25 deduction for a wrong answer. The mathematics is at school level: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and number system. What makes it demanding is the clock: at about 56 seconds a question in a 28-minute plan, there is room for neither long calculations nor many lapses. For candidates from non-quantitative backgrounds it is the section to practise most steadily; for engineers it is often a source of quick marks, with the risk of over-investing time in hard questions.

Worked examples

Geometry and ratio. The sides of a rectangle are in the ratio 3 : 2 and its perimeter is 50 cm. What is its area? The sum of two adjacent sides is 25, so the sides are 15 cm and 10 cm and the area is 150 sq cm.

Percentage. A price increases by 20% and then decreases by 20%. What is the net change? 1.2 × 0.8 = 0.96, a 4% fall.

LCM. Two bells ring at intervals of 12 and 18 minutes. After how many minutes will they ring together again? The LCM of 12 and 18 is 36.

Speed. A person walks at 6 km/h for the first 2 hours and 4 km/h for the next 3 hours. What is the average speed? Distance = 12 + 12 = 24 km in 5 hours, so 4.8 km/h.

Algebra. If x + 1/x = 3, find x² + 1/x². Squaring gives x² + 2 + 1/x² = 9, so the answer is 7.

Interest. What is the compound interest on 10,000 at 10% for 2 years? 10,000 × 1.1 × 1.1 = 12,100, so the interest is 2,100.

Each takes 30 to 60 seconds with the right method.

Speed methods worth learning

  • Multiplying factors for successive percentage changes.
  • Fractions for percentages (12.5% = 1/8, 16.67% = 1/6).
  • Work as units with the LCM of days as total work.
  • Total distance over total time for average speed, never the mean of two speeds.
  • Identities for algebra questions.
  • Squares to 30 and cubes to 15. See squares, cubes and roots practice.

Time management

StageTime (about 28 minutes)What to do
First passAbout 21 minutesSolve questions where the method is clear in 5 seconds; mark others
Second passAbout 6 minutesReturn to marked questions in order of ease
CheckAbout 1 minuteVerify doubtful arithmetic

Use the ceiling of about 75 seconds per question from the MAT mock test strategy, and see how to pick which questions to skip.

Negative marking in Mathematical Skills

With +1 and −0.25, the break-even accuracy is 20%. After eliminating one option, an attempt has a clearly positive expected value. A computed answer that matches no option usually means a slip: recheck rather than guess. Track net marks from guessed answers by topic. See our negative marking guide.

How to practise

  • Topic sets (10 to 15 questions): daily early on, at 45 seconds each.
  • Calculation drills: ten minutes a day.
  • Sectionals (30 questions in 28 minutes): two a week in the middle phase.
  • Full papers: weekly in the last month.

Our topic pages include percentage, profit and loss, averages, HCF and LCM, time and work, time, speed and distance and mensuration.

Common mistakes in preparation

  • Spending time on CAT-level problems that do not appear in MAT.
  • Not memorising squares, tables and fractions.
  • Practising untimed.
  • Letting one question run past two minutes.
  • Ignoring geometry and mensuration formulas.

Frequently asked questions

30, as one of five equal sections in the 150-question paper, according to AIMA.

It is generally at school level with moderate difficulty. The challenge is speed and accuracy across 30 questions in about 28 minutes, not advanced mathematics.

Arithmetic supplies the largest share (percentage, ratio, averages, profit and loss, interest, time and work, speed), followed by number system, algebra, geometry and mensuration. Check recent papers and mocks.

Many candidates plan around 28 minutes, about 56 seconds per question, with a 75-second ceiling on the first pass. Your own pace should come from timed sectionals.

Memorise squares, cubes and fraction-percentage pairs, learn shortcuts with their reasons, practise timed sets and skip questions that take too long on the first pass.

Not necessarily. Attempt the questions where you can see the method and leave the slowest few. The break-even accuracy is 20%.

After eliminating options, since a 0.25 penalty makes educated guesses positive. A computed answer that matches no option usually means a slip, so recheck.

Two a week in the middle phase of preparation, with daily topic sets and a full paper weekly in the last month.

Classify errors as concept gaps, arithmetic slips, misreading, speed problems or guesses, and redo the slowest questions with a faster method.
