How to Use Mock Tests for UPSC Prelims Preparation
06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team
For UPSC Prelims, reading builds knowledge, but mock tests build judgement. Both are needed, and many aspirants under-invest in the second.
Use confidence levels
Next to each answer in a mock, write one of three marks: sure, fairly sure, or guess. After scoring, check how accurate each category turned out. If your "fairly sure" answers are right two times out of three, guessing there is profitable. If your "guess" answers are right one time in four, leave them blank. The reasoning behind this is in our negative marking guide.
Sort mistakes into three bins
- Did not know: add the fact to your notes
- Half knew: revise the topic, because these are your costliest errors
- Misread: slow down on statements with words like "only" or "always"
Do not skip CSAT
Take a CSAT paper every week or two so there are no surprises. Short sets from the CSAT page keep your skills warm. Comprehension practice, in particular, benefits from the routine in building a reading comprehension routine.
