Accuracy vs Attempts: Which Matters More in Competitive Exams?

06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team

Students often argue about whether to attempt more or to be more accurate. The answer depends on the marking scheme, and you can work it out with simple arithmetic.

A worked comparison

Suppose each correct answer gives 4 marks and each wrong one costs 1. Attempting 40 questions at 80% accuracy gives 32 correct and 8 wrong, so 128 − 8 = 120 marks. Attempting 50 at 70% gives 35 correct and 15 wrong, so 140 − 15 = 125 marks. More attempts won here, even with lower accuracy, because the penalty is small compared with the reward.

Where it flips

With a heavier penalty or a lower accuracy, the balance reverses. At 50% accuracy on 50 attempts, you get 25 correct and 25 wrong: 100 − 25 = 75 marks, which is worse than the 120 above. The break-even accuracy depends on the penalty ratio.

Using this

Calculate your own marks-per-attempt from your last three mocks. If extra attempts at the margin are earning marks, push them; if not, tighten your selection. The theory behind this is in our negative marking guide, and the practical side is covered in improving speed and accuracy.

You can test your own numbers on any paper from our practice tests.
