How to Use Mock Tests for SSC CGL Preparation
06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team
SSC CGL Tier 1 gives you very little time per question, so a mock test is mostly a rehearsal in decision making. Done properly, it teaches you where your minutes go.
Set time targets per section
A starting point is 15 minutes per section across the four sections. Adjust after a few tests: if Reasoning takes you eight minutes at high accuracy, the saved time can go to Quantitative Aptitude. Record your actual times after each mock rather than relying on memory.
Experiment with order
Try General Awareness first in one mock, English first in another, and Quant first in a third. The best order is the one that gives the highest total, not the one that feels easiest. Many candidates find that starting with their strongest section calms their nerves.
Decide what to skip
In Quant, mark any question that takes over 90 seconds. In your review, count how many marks those questions would have earned against how much time they cost. Build your skip rule from that data. The SSC CGL Quant page has more on prioritising topics.
Close the gaps
Use topic practice such as percentage questions and coding-decoding sets to repair the weak spots found in each mock. For the full plan, see the SSC CGL strategy guide and the SSC CGL mock tests.
