Three branches, three kinds of preparation
Physical chemistry behaves like Mathematics: formula-based, numerical and time-consuming if the method is shaky. Organic chemistry rewards understanding of reaction mechanisms and the ability to predict products. Inorganic chemistry rewards memory: periodic trends, coordination compounds, block elements and the properties of common compounds.
What to test in mocks
- Mole concept, equilibrium, thermodynamics and electrochemistry for numerical practice
- Named reactions and reagent-based conversions for organic recall
- Periodic table trends and exceptions for inorganic revision
Using timing to your advantage
A Chemistry section can often be finished faster than Physics or Mathematics, so mock tests are a good place to experiment with attempting it early and banking time. After each test, note which wrong answers came from half-remembered facts. Those are cheap to fix with a short revision card, unlike a missing concept. For a plan that places Chemistry alongside the other sections, see the JEE Main preparation strategy.
