The broad structure
JEE Main, conducted by the National Testing Agency, tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for admission to engineering programmes. The paper is computer-based and includes multiple-choice questions along with numerical-value questions where you type in an answer.
Marking
Correct answers earn positive marks and incorrect multiple-choice answers are penalised. How numerical-value questions are marked and how many must be attempted has varied across sessions, so read the latest information bulletin before building your strategy.
What this means for mock tests
- Practise both question formats, because type-in answers have no options to guide you
- Rehearse the computer-based interface so that navigation is automatic
- Decide a policy on guessing that reflects the negative marking rules
Our JEE Main preparation strategy shows how to turn this structure into a weekly schedule, and the JEE Main mock test hub lists tests you can attempt now.
Note: exam patterns change. This page is a general guide and not an official source; consult the official NTA bulletin for the current rules.
