A sample question from this test
A boat covers some distance downstream at 21 km/h and returns upstream at 13 km/h. What is the speed of the stream (in km/h)?
- 4
- 2
- 11
- 6
Answer: A. 4. Speed of the stream = (down − up) ÷ 2 = (21 − 13) ÷ 2 = 4 km/h.
How to approach this test
Pipes and Cisterns: Treat filling pipes as positive rates and emptying pipes or leaks as negative rates, then divide the capacity by the net rate.
Boats and Streams: Downstream speed is boat plus stream and upstream is boat minus stream; the boat speed is half the sum of the two and the stream speed half their difference.
Problems on Trains: Convert km/h to m/s with 5/18, add the train length to the platform or other train when crossing, and add speeds only when trains run in opposite directions.
This set leans easy, so use it to confirm that you can solve the basic pattern accurately before you move to harder sets. At 15 questions in 25 minutes, you have about 100 seconds per question on average. After you submit, review every wrong or guessed answer using the explanations.
