A sample question from this test

A boat covers some distance downstream at 25 km/h and returns upstream at 11 km/h. What is the speed of the stream (in km/h)?

  1. 14
  2. 7
  3. 17
  4. 5

Answer: B. 7. Speed of the stream = (down − up) ÷ 2 = (25 − 11) ÷ 2 = 7 km/h.

How to approach this test

Mixtures and Alligation: Alligation gives the ratio directly: (dearer − mean) : (mean − cheaper). Check that the mean price lies between the two prices.

Pipes and Cisterns: Treat filling pipes as positive rates and emptying pipes or leaks as negative rates, then divide the capacity by the net rate.

Boats and Streams: Downstream speed is boat plus stream and upstream is boat minus stream; the boat speed is half the sum of the two and the stream speed half their difference.

Problems on Trains: Convert km/h to m/s with 5/18, add the train length to the platform or other train when crossing, and add speeds only when trains run in opposite directions.

This set mixes straightforward questions with a few that need an extra step, so it works well as a checkpoint once the basics are comfortable. At 40 questions in 60 minutes, you have about 90 seconds per question on average. After you submit, review every wrong or guessed answer using the explanations.
