How to Improve Speed and Accuracy in Competitive Exams

Speed without accuracy is guessing; accuracy without speed means an unfinished paper. Competitive exams demand both, so you have to train them together.

Start with timed practice

Every practice test should be timed, even short ones. A timer changes which questions you choose and how carefully you read.

Master question selection

You do not have to attempt every question. Scan a section, attempt the ones you can do quickly, and mark the rest for review. This alone improves both speed and accuracy.

Speed up calculations deliberately

For exams like SSC CGL and banking, calculation speed is a bottleneck. Practise approximation and shortcut methods on paper, then confirm accuracy with timed drills.

Use elimination

Even when you cannot solve fully, eliminating two wrong options turns a guess into a calculated choice — and protects you when there is negative marking.

Track accuracy separately
