SSC CGL Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

Tier 1 is a short, four-section test. Knowing its layout helps you design realistic mocks.

Tier 1 layout

The Staff Selection Commission conducts the Combined Graduate Level examination in multiple tiers. Tier 1 is a computer-based objective test with four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. The paper has had 100 questions in 60 minutes, with 25 questions per section.

Marking

Each question has carried two marks, with negative marking for incorrect answers. As details can change between cycles, confirm the current scheme in the official notice.

Using the pattern

  • Plan roughly 15 minutes per section as a starting point, then adjust to your strengths
  • Practise on screen, since the exam is computer-based
  • Allow a few minutes at the end to revisit flagged questions

See our SSC CGL strategy for pacing and use the SSC CGL mock test hub for tests.

Note: this summary is not official. Refer to the Staff Selection Commission notification for the current pattern.
