How to Use Mock Tests for GATE Preparation
06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team
GATE mocks have one feature most other exams lack: three different question types in one paper. Reading your result by type often shows a pattern the total score hides.
Break the score down by type
After each paper compute your accuracy on multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer questions separately. Candidates frequently discover that numerical-answer questions are costing them marks through small calculation errors, or that multiple-select questions are being answered too confidently.
Secure the easy marks first
General Aptitude is the cheapest marks in the paper. Attempt it early in your mocks and aim for near-full accuracy, then spend your remaining effort on Engineering Mathematics and the core subject.
Build stamina for three hours
From the last two to three months, take a full paper each week under real conditions. Pay attention to the last hour: if accuracy drops, you may need to change your pacing or take a short break between sections, as you would on the day.
Review smartly
Keep a formula notebook and a list of the questions you got wrong twice. See how to review incorrect questions for a method. For more depth on your branch, use core subject tests, and read the GATE strategy guide.
