GATE Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

GATE has a consistent structure across branches, though the weight of each part varies. Knowing it helps you plan mocks.

The structure

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted by one of the participating IITs or IISc on a rotating basis. Each paper has had 65 questions for 100 marks over three hours, with a General Aptitude section, and then the subject-specific content, including Engineering Mathematics where applicable.

Question types

Questions include multiple-choice, multiple-select and numerical-answer types. Marking differs by type: multiple-choice answers have carried a penalty for incorrect responses, while multiple-select and numerical-answer questions have been treated differently. Check the current brochure for specifics.

Using the pattern in mocks

  • Take three-hour papers matching your branch
  • Practise each question type separately before mixing them
  • Save time for flagged questions at the end

Apply it with the GATE strategy guide and the tests on the GATE mock test hub.
