How to Set a Realistic Target Score for Mock Tests

06 Oct 2026 · TestMint Team

A target score works only if it is realistic enough to believe and ambitious enough to need effort. You can set one from your own data.

Start with your baseline

Take two or three mocks and average the scores. This is your starting level, not your ceiling.

Set a stretch goal

Choose a score about 10 to 15 per cent above your baseline for the next month. Large jumps are discouraging, whereas steady rises build confidence.

Break it into sections

A total score is vague. Convert it into section targets, such as 80% accuracy in one section and a certain number of attempts in another. These give you daily actions.

Compare with the exam, not your friends

Use information about the exam's typical qualifying levels from official sources instead of other students' mock scores. Always check the exam authority for cut-off information.

Revisit monthly

Raise the target when you hit it twice in a row; lower it only if your preparation time has changed. Write the target and the plan together so that each study session connects to it. See your first mock test if you have not set a baseline yet, and use how to analyse results to track progress.
